Diagnostics and Procedures
The cardiac catheterization lab is the provincial referral centre for invasive cardiac testing and procedures. We perform over 3,000 advanced cardiovascular procedures annually. Our dedicated health-care team uses cutting-edge minimally invasive technologies and upholds the highest standard of care in diagnosing and treating a variety of cardiac conditions.Â
Â
These procedures include:Â
- cardiac angiography (commonly known as the dye test)Â
- PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention – commonly known as stenting)Â
- electrophysiology studiesÂ
- pacemaker insertion Â
- implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICD)Â
- right heart investigations. Â
The cardiac catheterization lab also offers minimally invasive procedures to repair structural problems with your heart. This includes:Â
- transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI)Â Â
- atrial septal defect (ASD)Â
- patent foramen ovale (PFO)Â Â
The cardiac catheterization lab has a skilled team of highly trained cardiologists, nurses, and technicians. There are also support staff and office workers who help make sure you get great care.Â
The cardiac catheterization lab uses a central electronic booking process for diagnostic cardiac catheterization. A referral from your primary care provider is sent to our intake coordinator and, in collaboration with the cardiology team, prioritizes and schedules your procedure. Â
After your referral is prioritized and scheduled, you will be notified of a pre-admission appointment. This appointment may be in person, a phone call or virtual. During this appointment, your health-care team will review the plan for your cardiac catheterization lab procedure and review any necessary preparations.  Â

Heart Force One
Heart Force One is an initiative to provide access to cardiac catheterization labs via flight in Newfoundland and Labrador. This service enables health-care providers and partners of NL Health Services to transport patients admitted to hospitals throughout the province to the cardiac catheterization lab, enabling them to undergo diagnostic tests. When possible, patients may return home the same day, minimizing disruptions to their care while ensuring timely access to cardiac assessments and interventions.
