5 South A

5 South A (5SA) is an inpatient unit that includes a special care unit (CSCU), providing care to approximately 2,800 admissions and transfers per year. 

The unit accepts admissions from across the province for:

• cardiology services
• cardiac surgery
• implantable cardiac defibrillator and pacemaker care
• cardiac catheterization 
• stabilized patients from the coronary care unit
• direct cardiology admissions from the Health Sciences Centre emergency department and other areas. 

The  special care unit (SCU) is for cardiac surgery patients who are transferred from the cardiac intensive care unit but still require specialized care. Patients move to one of the 36 floor beds as they progress in their recovery. 

Our team consists of: 

• nurses (registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nurse practitioners), 
• physiotherapists,
• occupational therapists,
• social workers,
• registered dietitians;
• pharmacists,
• respiratory therapists,
• speech language pathologists, and
• support services from medical service aids and a ward clerk.
