Cardiac surgery
The Health Sciences Centre is the specialized care centre for cardiac surgery in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The cardiac surgery team at NL Health Services is dedicated to advancing the cardiac surgery program to provide life-saving procedures and advancing the surgical treatment options in our province. The surgical team completes many surgeries. Â
The team consists of:Â

- nurses (both registered nurses and licensed practical nurses)Â
- cardiac perfusionistÂ
- registered nurse first assistÂ
- anesthesiaÂ
- anesthesia assistantÂ
- medical service aid (MSA)Â Â
- and environmental services.Â
When your doctor determines that cardiac surgery may be the most appropriate option, the âHeart Teamâ will make the decision. The âHeart Teamâ has a weekly meeting to discuss the best option for patients. Â
The Heart Team includes:Â
- cardiac surgeonsÂ
- cardiologists Â
- cardiac interventionists Â
- a cardiac surgery utilization manager Â
- And a structural heart and aortic nurse coordinator.Â

The Heart Team assesses your medical needs and risks to determine the appropriate treatment decision that includes your preferences and goals. When the treatment decision is cardiac surgery, we will add you to the waitlist and the team determines the priority of all patients awaiting surgery. Â
